It started with repeated questions, then unanswered phone calls, then quiet excuses to avoid gatherings. She said she was “tired,” but in truth, she was slipping into a silence she never chose.
Her world grew smaller: missed jokes, missed moments, missed connections.
It wasn’t until Joy, her granddaughter cried in frustration that she finally sought help. A hearing test changed everything — but by then, loneliness had already settled in.

Why Your Support Matters
I recently joined Hear Québec’s Board of Directors. During my onboarding, I participated in an exercise where I had to transcribe phonetically altered sentences — a simple activity that offered a powerful reminder of how exhausting and isolating communication can become when hearing is impaired.
But for many people, this isn’t an exercise. It’s their everyday life.
Without timely diagnosis, treatment, and accessible services, hearing loss can lead to profound isolation, social stigma, barriers to employment, difficulties navigating health systems, reduced quality of life, increased risks of cognitive decline and dementia, and even a higher risk of falls. These are not small consequences — they shape a person’s entire future.
Together, we can make Quebec a place where no one is left behind because of hearing loss.
